Hyderabad’s Nehru Zoological Park (NZP) is gearing up for a world-class revamp, modeled on the internationally acclaimed Singapore Zoo. The ambitious transformation project is aimed at boosting footfall, improving facilities, and making NZP a global tourist destination while strengthening its conservation and education initiatives.
Currently, NZP attracts around 20 lakh visitors annually, with most being local tourists. Zoo director Dr. Sunil S Hiremath explained that the new project will bring the park up to international standards, ensuring it appeals not just to Indian visitors but also to foreign tourists.
Partnership with Singapore Zoo
The Singapore Zoo, considered one of the best in the world, has had long-standing collaborations with Hyderabad Zoo through animal exchanges, breeding programs, and infrastructure support. Building on this relationship, upcoming projects at NZP will include:
- A night safari, offering visitors a rare glimpse into nocturnal wildlife.
- A bio-luminescent park, designed to create an immersive nature experience.
- A modern aquarium, showcasing aquatic biodiversity.
Experts from Singapore Zoo are guiding these projects to ensure global-level execution.
What the Revamp Will Include
In mid-October, a Hyderabad Zoo team will visit Singapore Zoo to study its design and operations. Based on their findings, several upgrades will be introduced:
- Modern Enclosures: Currently, NZP uses standard steel for animal enclosures. Inspired by Singapore Zoo, stainless steel enclosures will be installed, offering durability, reduced corrosion, and smoother finishes that lower the risk of animal injuries.
- Redesigned Layout: The existing zoo layout includes multiple walking paths between enclosures, which can be confusing for visitors. The new design will be more compact and visitor-friendly, ensuring better flow and comfort.
- Enhanced Visitor Experience: Introduction of professional tour operators, interactive spaces, and educational elements will make visits more engaging and informative.
Dr. Hiremath emphasized that this transformation will not only increase visitor numbers but also elevate the zoo’s role in conservation, education, and responsible tourism.
👉 At animalrights.in, we emphasize that wildlife conservation is not only about public zoos or forests—it’s also about ensuring responsible stewardship wherever animals are kept, whether in private sanctuaries, wildlife parks, or rehabilitation centres. Every inquiry, audit, and investigation should reaffirm that animals are treated with care, respect, and dignity.
